There are concerns that strength training is not suitable for children who have yet to enter puberty. Some studies suggest that it might harm a child’s growth, increase the risk of injuries and the inability to increase muscular strength.

However, medical professionals also stated that parents should not be worried about their child lifting weight as it can be very beneficial to them from as young as 7 years old. What’s important is the mind-set, form, and safety of the child undergoing the training. Children should not be lifting weight with the intention of lifting as much as they can. Instead, it is safer for them to start with lighter weights and perform more repetitions. It can also be a great help if children are watched and taught by trained professional. Always remember to warm-up and cool down with stretching to maintain flexibility. At the same time, encourage children to participate in a mix of activities, not just strength training, to development a holistic and function fitness level.

On the other hand, parents have the responsibility to ensure that their child is suitable for the training and is properly guided under safe environment. Parents should not force their child to lift weight if they do not want to and that they have to be able to understand and follow instructions if they wish to.

Done right, strength training can greatly aid to improve sports performance, reduce the risk of injury and build habits for lifelong health and fitness.
